With the right support at the right moment, a child’s life can be changed for ever. This is the starting-point for the KinderHelden (Heroes for Children) initiative, which brings together primary-school children from disadvantaged backgrounds with voluntary mentors.
The mentors meet the children for two to three hours weekly to help them with homework, explore the world of books with them or undertake exciting leisure activities. These everyday heroes give their young charges more than time and attention; at the same time, they encourage empathy and inspire hope.
The TÜV SÜD Foundation is assisting the nationwide initiative to grow ist operations in Munich, including helping to find new voluntary mentors. But the Foundation also provides support for experiences that go beyond the classroom; nationally based funding allows primary-school children to foster scientific interests by attending workshops or galvanise their curiosity by exploring museums. A vital step towards equity in education and equality of opportunity.
