Educators at universities and colleges enhance understanding
Inclusion opens the door for new approaches. But can people with intellectual disabilities work as educators at universities and colleges? An audacious scheme at first glance, it is in fact already a success in German regions including Schleswig-Holstein and North-Rhine Westphalia. With our support, a project rollout in Franconia is currently in the planning stage.
In partnership with Access gGmbH, the project at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg enables people with cognitive disabilities to train as “educators”. Drawing on their own experience, they inform students about the specific abilities and needs of people with disabilities. Under the motto of “Nothing about us without us”, their brief is to address students at several universities and colleges and present the world from the viewpoint of people with disabilities.
Further partners in the project include the Bavarian State Ministry for Family, Labour and Social Affairs and the disability charity Aktion Mensch.
