Learning German faster with a free app: 2023 saw the launch of KIKUS, a new language-learning app that can be used on any smartphone and tablet. The app can be used anywhere regardless of location, representing a major benefit for children in refugee families that enables them to build a connection to their new home more quickly. The TÜV SÜD Foundation has supported the development of KIKUS language versions in Ukrainian and Russian.
KIKUS is an interactive learning tool for early language learners aged three and upwards. Offering exciting games and integrated voice output, it can be used for independent learning at home as well as supporting language acquisition in childcare and school settings. The concept is based on the KIKUS method developed by the Centre for Multilingualism in Early Childhood (zkm) in Munich. It supports the linguistic development of children from migrant backgrounds both when learning German and for their native language. The play-based activities allow even children of pre-school age to practise vocabulary, grammar and socio-linguistic patterns.
Although KIKUS has primarily provided support in classroom-based lessons to date, the new app also significantly simplifies remote online language learning. It enables many children to bridge their language gaps and smooths the start of their life in Germany.
