Philosophy meets technology – Philosopher in Residence

Accompanying transformation processes with philosophical debate

Climate change, digitalisation, new mobility concepts – the world is currently facing enormous challenges and upheavals. Acceptance of change can only be cultivated by means of an all-embracing way of thinking that focuses on interconnections and interactions, that applies classification and consideration to developments in natural sciences, engineering or life sciences and that fosters their public understanding by bringing clarity and transparency. Philosophy is a field that is well equipped to illuminate the worlds of ideas and actions within modern scientific and technical disciplines from many different perspectives.

Vier junge Menschen stehen auf einer Wiese und halten Protestschilder mit Umweltbotschaften wie "SOS", "Don't break my earth", "We are skipping our lessons to teach you one" und "There is no earth upgrade". Im Hintergrund sind weitere Personen in einem Park zu sehen.Taking this approach as a basis, the TÜV SÜD Foundation has partnered with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to award the Philosopher in Residence fellowship to internationally renowned representatives of the field of philosophy whose interests lie in inter-disciplinary collaboration. The fellowship-holders spend twelve months at TUM engaged in teaching and research. The first Philosophers in Residence have already taken up their positions in Munich; to autumn 2024, Professor Roberto Giuntini (University of Cagliari) will examine the subject of “Quantum Logic and the Second Quantum Revolution”, while Adjunct Professor Dr Rico Gutschmidt (University of Konstanz / ETH Zürich) will investigate “Boundary Situations and Spiritual Care”. The work of both Fellows will contribute to enabling innovative scientific approaches to take effect in a democratic and sustainable manner and thus explore and positively shape the transformations that lie ahead in our society.
