The Hopper project recently launched by students from Space Team Aachen has the goal of developing experimental rockets with the capability of returning to Earth. They have received funding from the TÜV SÜD Foundation since 2024.
Re-landing a rocket on Earth currently involves a whole host of technical challenges, so the student-driven initiative has set itself an ambitious goal. But that is precisely the attraction for these future engineers. The Hopper project offers enormous potential for delivering new information and new findings.
In addition, reusable rockets would make a crucial contribution to sustainability in the aerospace industry. The students therefore aim to approach their overarching goal in stages, starting by creating a rocket that can hover a few metres above the ground before landing safely.
Established in 2020, the Space Team is Aachen’s largest student initiative and has over 190 students from a range of disciplines that are currently collaborating on seven projects. All these projects benefit these up-and-coming engineers by providing practical and project experience and supporting academic dissertations and theses, as well as driving aerospace research –to ensure that more rockets make it safely back down to earth in the future!
