The nonprofit organisation TUM Carbon Removal Initiative e.V. is developing a method of directly capturing CO₂ from the air. Around 50 students from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) have poured years of research into the project and constructed a pilot system in the makerspace at the entrepreneurship centre UnternehmerTUM, including patent application.
Their Direct Air Capture & Storage method removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it as dry ice. The first systems are slated to go into operation in 2025; the containers for their operation have been ready and waiting on TUM’s premises since mid-2024. With support from the TÜV SÜD Foundation, the students aim to make an active contribution to the battle against climate change, while simultaneously acquiring vital skills for their future careers.
Combining practical research, innovative spirit and sustainable action, the project thus serves as a convincing example of the students’ commitment and dedication.
