Supporting training of vocational school and college teachers is a key focal area for the TÜV SÜD Foundation. Since 2015, we have funded the then newly established course in Engineering Education at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences and the Technical University of Munich (TUM). These teacher-training activities have been joined by further new courses at the Amberg-Weiden and Rosenheim Universities of Applied Sciences, both likewise collaborations with TUM.
All these new concepts have the common goals of increasing the attractiveness of vocational school teaching as a profession, streamlining course lengths and offering tailored training. As the current high student intake demonstrates, the new courses are making a significant contribution to building and expanding a cohort of young teachers for vocational schools and colleges throughout the country. The topic is an important one, because the need for teachers is very real: according to a study conducted by the Scientific Commission of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the German Länder, the nation’s vocational education institutions will find themselves facing a shortage of around 5,000 teachers by 2025.
Yet well-qualified vocational school and college educators are vital to guarantee a highly qualified workforce. Ensuring a good supply of excellent teachers for vocational schools is the only way to combat the lack of well-trained staff in the industrial and trades sectors!
