Starting a course of studies can be a difficult time. For many would-be students, the transition from school to college or university is an overwhelming obstacle. This is particularly evident in STEM subjects, where many new students in these fields drop out shortly after the start of their courses. Varying levels of proficiency shown by first-year students, particularly in mathematics, have been identified as a key reason.
Now the University of Applied Sciences Mannheim is stepping up to provide assistance with support from the TÜV SÜD Foundation. Free preparatory sessions allow students to ready themselves for their courses, with the bonus of giving freshers an opportunity to get to know each other. These benefits are provided by a cross-faculty preparatory course for mathematics that takes the form of peer coaching, with higher-level students helping the new arrivals to fill gaps in their maths knowledge.
Classroom-based tuition is complemented by an online course on the university’s Moodlebased learning platform. Its explanatory videos enable the participants to tackle all the main areas of school mathematics before they commence their studies. As a further part of this innovative modular blended learning concept, the exercises from the classroom-based sessions are posted in the online course in parallel and can be accessed at any time. An all-round package that ensures students get off to a smooth start!
